Mango Season at Taormina Sicilian Cuisine has become an annual event that fills gourmands with anticipation over the exquisite creations of Regional Executive Chef Hiroyuki "Hiro" Mimura. This year, Chef Hiro gives the Mango menu a dreamy upgrade that is sure to please.

MANGO ‘SONGARE’ SUMMER

Featuring local Hayden mangoes and plenty of edible flora, the three dishes are an Italian dream or songare. The limited Mango ‘Songare’ Summer menu will be available at Taormina Sicilian Cuisine from now, while local mango ingredients are available.

OYSTER MIGNONETTE $24 (4 pc)

Four pieces of raw Fanny Bay oysters come with a mango mignonette sauce topping that features ‘Nduja spreadable pork salami from Calabria, Italy, along with sea asparagus and ogo seaweed. Additional $6 per oyster is available upon request.

CARPACCIO DI POLPO $22

Succulent Spanish octopus topped with Hayden Mangoes, a homemade chili pepper vinaigrette and Hearts-of-Fire microgreens.

CHEESECAKE ESPUMA $16

A gorgeous cheesecake custard with fresh Hayden Mangoes.

MANGO COCKTAILS

Mango season at Taormina isn't complete without their Mango Cocktails! The mango cocktails, nearly as popular as the dishes, are ideal for cooling off during the hot summer months. This year, the team let the star ingredient speak for itself in the Mango Bellini ($14), Mango Mojito ($14), and the non-alcoholic Mango No-jito ($12).

About Taormina Sicilian Cuisine

Opened in 2007, Taormina Sicilian Cuisine is one of the top Italian fine dining destinations in Hawaii. True to his Italian training, Regional Executive Chef Hiroyuki “Hiro” Mimura’s authentic Sicilian cuisine often features hand cut pastas, fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients for a menu that shines with unforgettable dishes that tell a great story. The wine list is as persnickety as it is superb—curated to pair perfectly with Chef Hiro’s fare. His signatures, including the uni pasta, Frutti di Mare and Bolognese Alla “Siciliana,” have garnered an impressive following both locally and abroad. The restaurant also features seasonal dishes such as the mango menu.

Vino Sociale Fridays

190125 Appetito_017.jpg

Vino Sociale (pronounced so-shee-ah-lay), or “wine social” in Italian is the much more casual, carefree version of a wine tasting event. Guests are escorted to the back of the restaurant, down a ramp that leads to the outdoor patio. They are then greeted by welcome drink and are asked to freely seat themselves on the patio in a lounge setting.

Beverage Program Director, Jill Shiroma curates a flight of wine that is then paired with a rotating selection of off-menu specials that showcase Chef de Cuisine Naomi Ito’s hand in the kitchen. General Manager Kelly Nguyen arranges the spread in an “grazing table” fashion so that guests can help themselves to samplings of off-menu dishes. As the evening progresses, heartier entrée dishes—in shareable style—arrive for guests to enjoy, though guests are encouraged to order from the regular menu should their favorites be missing. In true Appetito fashion, an array of signature Neapolitan-style pizza will be served. The evening wraps up with a small bite of dessert.

The results of this is an awe-inspiring display of great food and wine paired friends, dates, and yes, strangers that mingle together as they enjoy the evening in an intimate yet laidback setting. And at an all-inclusive price of $55 per person or $100 per couple (including tax and tip), guests are treated to an exclusive and unique experience reminiscent of invitation-only social parties in the neighborhoods of Paris.

About Appetito Craft Pizza & Wine Bar

The 5,543 square-foot open-aired Appetito Craft Pizza & Wine Bar celebrated its grand opening on January 20, 2018. With a menu designed to encourage sharing, Regional Executive Chef Hiroyuki "Hiro" Mimura's creative gourmand expertise influence the authentic Italian dishes that include a range of Neapolitan-style pizza, 26oz T-bone steak, Cauliflower Frittos, and Matcha green tea Tiramisu; the limited menu will rotate regularly with seasonal bounty and Chef's inspiration.

The vibrant Wine Bar features a select list of over 100 fine wines available by the bottle and by the glass, along with craft beers, homemade limoncello liqueur, and handcrafted cocktails inspired by the island's culture.

IRRASHAIMASE! WELCOME TO MINORI! : MINORI Craft Japanese Tavern Kicks Off Grand Opening

  • Minori Craft Japanese Tavern (map)

20190130_0336.jpg

Minori Craft Japanese Tavern will officially open for business on Friday, February 1, 2019. Located at the former Tsukada Nojo space along Kalakaua Avenue (near the Hawaii Convention Center), the Japanese izakaya (tavern) is sure to be a hit with locals, convention-goers, and visitors.

Minori, or “harvest” in Japanese, is symbolic of the concept behind its name: a fresh approach to farm-to-table, with an emphasis on local farmers and produce. The restaurant features Aloha Tofu, Oahu Island Eggs, and an all-you-can-eat salad bar that doubles as a bottomless vegetable selection for its famous bijin nabe, or “Beautifying hot pot.”

“We want to be a place that continues to strengthen the ties between Hawaii and Japan,” says Keiji Shimamoto, director of AP Company, operator of Minori. “We thought that it would only be natural to do so by showcasing local ingredients in some of our signature dishes.”

AP Company is the parent company of several restaurants located throughout the United States including Irvine, Los Angeles, New York City, and a ramen concept in San Francisco.

Starting Friday, February 1, through Sunday, February 3, Minori Craft Japanese Tavern will offer $10 gift cards to the first 50 people in for dinner each day. Guests should also take a close look at the chopstick sleeve: the slips of paper double as an omikuji fortune ranging from Super Lucky, Lucky, to A Little Lucky. Customers are encouraged to bring back the slips of paper in exchange for the lucky item listed. To keep the celebratory atmosphere going, the restaurant will also do raffle prizes and feature DJ MatchaLime as the opening act for Minori’s rotating schedule of live DJs.

The restaurant will be open for lunch from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM daily; they will offer bento takeout options for lunch as well. Sunday through Thursday, the restaurant will be open for dinner from 5:00 PM – 12:00 AM, and open till 2:00 AM on Friday and Saturday. Friday and Saturday nights will also feature live DJ music. Happy Hour times are 5:00 – 6:00 PM, and 10:00 PM – 12:00 AM, daily; late night Happy Hour extends till 2:00 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Walk-ins without reservations are welcome.

There is free parking on the premises of the restaurant as well as free validated parking at Century Center for up to two hours.

Menu

Minori will offer Japanese izakaya-style fare such as chawanmushi (savory egg custard), sashimi, tempura, as well as a variety of charcoal-grilled options. There are also a range of creatively named menu items such as the “Meli Melo Chicken” (flambé-style chicken), “Japonica Roll” (sushi), and “Kale Namuru” (Korean-style marinated kale). For Tsukada Nojo fans, there’s also good news: Minori will continue to offer the “Beautifying Hot Pot” that won a Hale Aina award for Best Hot Pot, along with their popular White Bear and Matcha (green tea) Flan desserts.

IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: MINORI Craft Japanese Tavern Launches A Soft Opening

Minori Craft Japanese Tavern will be open for (some) business as of Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Located at the former Tsukada Nojo space along Kalakaua Avenue (near the Hawaii Convention Center), the restaurant itself is slated to officially open in February.

If this all feels a bit déjà vu, it’s because Minori rolled out a Pre-Opening holiday menu during the month of December with reservations-only based dinner parties and bento lunches. Starting this month, however, Minori will offer an expanded menu and begin accepting walk-in and reservation-based guests during its dinner hours.

“I’m very excited about opening a new restaurant in Hawaii just after the new year,” says Keiji Shimamoto, director of AP Company, operator of Minori. “We strive to stick with utilizing Hawaii’s fresh ingredients.”

General Manager Maki Sekiguchi is a recent transplant to the island; originally from Japan, she comes to Honolulu by way of San Francisco, where she ran the Tsukada Nojo ramen restaurant. Sekiguchi strives to run a front restaurant with cheerful local staff, reasonably priced yet high quality, delicious dishes, and most importantly, loved by the local community. “I will do my best with our team as I cultivate my knowledge of Japanese attentiveness and American passion,” says Sekiguchi. “We look forward to your continued support and encouragement.”

The soft opening dinner menu includes standard Japanese izakaya-style fare such as chawanmushi (savory egg custard), sashimi, tempura, as well as a variety of charcoal-grilled options.

The soft opening hours of operation will be limited to dinner from 5:00 PM – 12:00 AM, Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant will be closed on Monday. Happy Hour times are 5:00 – 6:00 PM, and 10:00 PM – 12:00 AM. Walk-ins without reservations are welcome.

There is free parking on the premises of the restaurant as well as free validated parking at Century Center for up to two hours.
